Theory
Brush up on your theories of learning here. Funderstanding.com has an excellent and VERY BRIEF introduction to all the popular theories of learning and mental development. Piaget, multiple intelligences, learningstyles, control theory - it's all here in 600 words or less. Recommended for any teacher who hasn't reviewed this stuff in the last year. And if you never have...? Well, here is your chance at redemption. ;-)
"The Science of TEYL" - A very short blurb outlining some facts and myths about ESL/EFL learning and teaching.
"Repeat after me doesn't work." This, according to one ESL expert in this story from the Taiwanese newspaper, The China Post.
"Reading for pleasure does." This, according to Stephen Krashen, Professor Emeritus, University of Southern California. A very interesting piece. Read it here. And Jane King, an associate professor in the English department at Soochow University, Taiwan, makes a similar claim here.
More commentary on Taiwan's problem's with English instruction: KK is out (hooray!), but with no replacement, kids are now using Bopomofo to remember English pronunciation (Oh, no!) Read the story here. One teacher's realistic view is here. More letters here, and here, saying Taiwanese teachers could be effective, but the emphasis on memorization ruins public English education. Taiwan's Ministry of Education has decided to bring in the foreigners, but not from Philippines, India or other low-cost sources. Read it here. Another ministry solution is to ban Kindergarten English. Read it here. If you think the public schools are bad, just look at the universities. TOEFL scores are looooow. Read it here.
A fine collection of articles about ESL / EFL teaching.
